MANILA, Philippines -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) will soon allow labor attachés overseas to hear administrative cases lodged against placement agencies here.

Labor Secretary Arturo Brion said in an interview that his office is currently preparing the administrative order that will formalize the additional responsibilities of DoLE staffers in Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLOs) around the world.

He said this is part of his administration's efforts to quell illegal recruitment efforts since the move will address the problem of a lack of follow-through in the prosecution of illegal recruiters.

Brion said what usually happens is, the victims file their cases with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration and then leave for work abroad.

These cases are, thus, dismissed because the workers cannot testify and provide additional information once they are abroad.

Brion said henceforth, these cases will be forwarded to the POLOs, which can then investigate and follow up on them.
